What's the one thing you always research before you even walk into the room? I look up who's going to be there and pick two or three people I really want to talk to. That way you're not just floating around hoping to bump into someone useful. It turns a random chat into a real plan, and you can actually prepare a couple good questions for them. Makes the whole thing way less awkward and more likely to pay off.

Bringing business cards is solid advice, but honestly, I've had more luck just asking people what they're working on right now. At a meetup last year, I skipped the card swap and just asked a guy about his current project. He spent ten minutes talking about a problem he couldn't solve, and I knew someone who could. That intro turned into a contract for my friend. The real move is to find a pain point you can connect to someone else.
