Tried a solo hike after my group bailed last Saturday and ended up helping a lost kid find his parents for 45 minutes
Was it a waste of a peaceful hike or did that detour actually make the day better than if I'd just walked the trail alone - has anyone else had a canceled plan turn into something totally unexpected like that?

No way, you basically traded a peaceful hike for a free babysitting gig, sounds like a total downgrade.

Ngl that sounds way better than just walking in silence for a few hours. Tbh I had a similar thing happen when my fishing trip got rained out last spring. Ended up helping this elderly lady dig her car out of a mud hole for like an hour, and we got to talking about her grandkids and old school camping stories. Honestly that whole detour was way more memorable than just catching some trout by myself would have been. That kid's parents probably thought you were a total legend too.

So did helping that kid actually make you feel more connected to the whole experience, or were you just waiting for it to be over the whole time? I've had stuff like that where one random act makes the whole day feel different, but sometimes it just drains the energy you had planned for yourself. Which side of it did you land on once you finally got back on the trail?
