Have you ever tried using a card scraper on curly maple instead? I find it leaves an even smoother finish with less sanding after.

Oh man, that's exactly what I found too. I spent way too long fighting with sandpaper on a figured maple guitar neck last year. @sarah818, I switched to a cabinet scraper and it cut my finishing time in half. The scratches were gone after just a couple passes. I did have to sharpen it more than I expected, but the time I saved not sanding was worth it. Card scrapers are great too but for bigger flat surfaces the cabinet scraper just feels more stable in my hands.

Oh man yeah, card scrapers are the real deal on figured maple. @ellis.leo, do you find you have to sharpen them more often than a cabinet scraper to get that same glassy finish? I'm wondering if the extra sharpening time is worth the smoother result.
