Trademark dispute took 8 months to settle over a name I barely used

Started a small pet supply shop in Austin last year. Picked a name, filed the LLC, got a trademark application in. Then some guy from California claims he's been using a similar name since 2019. His lawyer sent a cease and desist. I spent 8 months going back and forth with my lawyer. In the end he dropped it because I had proof of first use in commerce. The whole thing cost me $3,500 in legal fees. Anyone else waste way too much time on name disputes?

Man, totally been there - I just rebranded and saved myself the headache.

Oh man, RIGHT? I feel your pain so much. I had a similar nightmare over a name for my online vintage shop and it was literally the most draining, pointless 6 months of my life. Did your lawyer not warn you that it could drag on like that?

Honestly, I gotta push back a little here. You spent $3,500 to keep a name you barely used, and that sounds like a win for the other guy's lawyer. Tbh, if you were only using it a little, maybe it wasn't worth the fight. Ngl, sometimes it's smarter to just pick a new name and move on, especially when legal fees start stacking up. A trademark dispute over a name you didn't even build a brand around is just burning cash. Respectfully, that money could've gone into better inventory or marketing instead.
