That line about auto-renewal got me too, except mine was buried in a section about "additional services" that I skimmed right past. What saved me was going back through every single email and text from that whole project and saving them into one folder. Turns out my old boss had agreed in writing to cap the fees, and that email was dated after the contract was signed. My lawyer said newer written agreements can override older contract terms in a lot of cases, so that paper trail was everything. If you have any old emails or messages from that time, dig them up now before you do anything else. Cost me about $300 in a lawyer consult to find out I was covered, which beats the $40k they wanted.
