The coffee shop lady who spotted my grocery budget flaw
Last month I was in Portland at the Starbucks on 5th Ave and the woman behind me, Carol, glanced at my receipt and said, 'Honey, you spend more on snacks than your actual meals.' She was right, I was dropping like $40 a week on granola bars and trail mix when I could just buy bulk oats and raisins for $8. I switched that week and now I'm putting the extra $120 into my emergency fund. Has anyone else had a stranger point out a blind spot in their spending that actually stuck?

My sister had this exact thing happen at a gym in Austin, some guy watched her check her phone and said she probably spends more on app subscriptions than her rent. She laughed it off at first, but then she actually added it up and he was right, like $60 a month on little apps she barely opened. It made me realize most of us have one blind spot we just dont see because we're too close to it. The trick isnt just cutting the spending, its noticing the pattern, like how snacks sneak in at the register or subscriptions pile up after a free trial. Once you spot it, you cant unsee it, and thats when the change actually sticks. Good on you for acting on it so fast, that $120 a month adds up to real money over a year.
