Budgeting meal kits finally made sense after I did the math
I used to think meal kit services were a total waste of money. My friend kept pushing me to try Hungryroot, so I finally caved about two months ago. I sat down with my grocery receipts from the previous 6 weeks and compared them to what I'd pay for the meal kit. Turns out my grocery store trips were costing me around $85 a week because I'd buy random stuff that went bad. The meal kit runs me about $70 a week and I use everything they send. Plus I stopped impulse buying snacks and drinks at the grocery store because I go there way less. Has anyone else seen their food budget actually go down after switching to a kit?

The 'orphan ingredients' part hit home for me.

I actually read a study a while back that said meal kits can cut household food waste by like 40%, which is basically throwing money in the trash less often lol. Sounds like that's exactly what happened with you and those random grocery buys.

yo @the_joseph that study actually makes total sense now that i think about it. i used to be all "nah meal kits are just overpriced convenience traps" but after seeing how much random produce and half-used sauces i was tossing every week i get it. like last month i bought a whole bag of avocados thinking id make guac twice but nope, three went bad before i even touched them. meal kits just give you exactly what you need so youre not stuck with orphan ingredients. kinda wild how much food i was wasting without even realizing it.
