My sister convinced me to stop booking hotels for weekend trips

We were planning a quick trip to Austin and I had a hotel picked out for $120 a night. She asked why I never look at vacation rental sites for last-minute deals. I checked one the day before we left and found a whole apartment for $65 a night, which saved us over $100. I always thought those sites were for longer stays. Has anyone else found good deals on short stays like that?

Glad it worked out for you but I've had the opposite happen. Found a cheap rental once and it was a total scam, place looked nothing like the photos. Ended up paying for a hotel anyway that night. For a short trip the hotel is just easier, you know what you're getting. I don't want to waste time dealing with a host or reading a list of checkout chores. The extra cost is worth it for the peace of mind.

Totally get where @king.robin is coming from, but reading recent reviews can help you avoid those bad surprises.

Yeah that exact thing happened to me last year... booked a place that looked great in the photos but the whole building smelled weird and the bed was broken. Spent the whole first night stressed and trying to find somewhere else. Sometimes the cheaper price just isn't worth that kind of headache.
