My food budget for a week in Lisbon was only 45 euros

I just got back from Portugal and I'm still shocked at how little I spent on meals. I tracked every single euro and it came out to 45 euros for the whole week, which is about 6.50 a day. The key was hitting the local markets right before closing, around 6 pm, when vendors would sell fresh bread, fruit, and pastries for almost nothing to avoid taking it back. I'd get a bag of oranges for a euro and a few pastel de natas for 50 cents each. For lunch, I'd make big sandwiches from market ingredients and eat in a park. I honestly ate better than I do at home and never felt like I was missing out. Has anyone else found a specific city or market where this strategy worked amazingly well?

My buddy did something similar in Naples last year! He found this tiny bakery that would sell day-old sfogliatella for next to nothing in the late afternoon. He'd pair it with cheap, amazing tomatoes from a street stall. Said his whole food budget for three days was less than twenty euros, and he ate like a king. It's crazy how much you can save just by shopping when the locals do.

My cousin got fresh focaccia for like one euro right before closing in Genoa. Those end of day deals are a total game changer for eating cheap.
