I used to book hostels months ahead but now I wait until the day before

Everyone says to book early for cheap beds, but I found prices in Lisbon actually drop if you check the hostel's own site the night before arrival. I saved 15 euros a night last October by booking a bunk at The Independente Hostel 24 hours out. Has anyone else noticed last-minute deals beating early bird rates in other cities?

My last trip to Berlin I booked a bed at St. Christopher's Inn exactly six hours before my train arrived. The price was half what it showed a week earlier. I totally get the stress of waiting, but sometimes the gamble works. It feels like a weird secret sale for people who can handle the nerves. I still get sweaty palms doing it, but those savings are real.

Yeah, that couch story hits home. I once booked a hostel in Prague literally from the airport bus.

Oh man, that's a risky game but it sounds like it paid off! I got burned in Barcelona once waiting too long and ended up on a couch, not even a bunk. It makes you wonder if hostels just panic and slash prices when they see empty beds. What's the latest you've ever booked a place?
