A hostel in Lisbon changed my mind about booking dorms vs private rooms

I stayed at this place called Home Lisbon Hostel last month and got placed in a 12-bed dorm. After 2 nights of someone snoring like a chainsaw and another person packing at 5am, I walked to the reception and upgraded to a private room for 35 euros more per night. The peace of sleep made my whole trip better and now I always check private room prices first. Has anyone else had a hostel experience that made you switch from dorms?

Wait, you really had someone packing at 5am in a dorm? That's brutal. I always think hostels should have quiet hours for that exact reason, but half the people just don't care. I've been in dorms where I ended up sleeping with earplugs and a sleep mask and still got woken up by a light turning on. Private rooms are the only way to go if you value sleep, honestly. A few extra bucks is worth not being miserable the whole trip. You make a good point about checking prices first.

Had a buddy who booked a 12-bed dorm in Prague and some guy showed up at 3am drunk, turned on the main light, and started Facetiming his girlfriend. My friend just sat up, stared at him, and said "dude, some of us have trains at 7." Guy ignored him, kept talking for another 20 minutes. By the time he finally shut up, the whole room was awake and pissed.

Used to think people overreacted in dorms but your story 100% changed my mind. Some people really have zero respect for shared spaces.
