My brother told me to always buy a whole chicken instead of parts
He said it would be cheaper, and he was right. I got one for $7 at the store, roasted it for dinner, and used the leftover meat for sandwiches. The carcass made about two quarts of soup stock. Has anyone else found a specific cut or item that stretches your food budget way further than expected?

That "art of the leftover" thing is so real. My mom used to make a huge pot of chili from one pound of ground beef and a bunch of beans, and we'd eat it for three days straight. It taught me that stretching a meal is more about planning than the actual ingredient.

My grandma swore by buying a big pork shoulder. She'd slow cook it and get pulled pork, tacos, and then use the bone for beans. It fed their whole family for days.

Your grandma was a budget genius, @the_sam. Mine would do the same thing but with a whole chicken. Roast chicken one night, then soup for a week. These days I see a pork shoulder and just think about the single guy who'd eat it all in one sitting and feel sick. We lost the art of the leftover.
