Walked past a brick wall I built 8 years ago in Austin and noticed the difference between my old joints and my current ones

The old mortar lines were all over the place in width and depth but the new section I patched last month had clean quarter-inch joints and I realized I just needed enough repetition to get the feel for consistency without thinking about it. Anyone else go back and cringe at their early work or is that just part of the trade?

Taylor12 made a good point there. Used to think the sloppy stuff was embarrassing but you're right, it's still standing and doing its job.

You're talking about the mortar joints being sloppy, but I see it different. That old wall has been standing for 8 years doing its job just fine, which is more than some perfect-looking walls can say. Consistency matters, sure, but a functional wall that's been holding up for almost a decade is nothing to cringe at.
