Am I the only one who thinks plastic spacers in bricklaying cause more problems than they solve? Had to redo a whole patio because of them.

On my cousin's driveway project last summer, we saw plastic spacers warp after the first rain. What exactly went wrong with your patio? Did they keep the mortar from setting right or mess up the spacing over time? I've heard they can crack if the ground moves even a little. Honestly, it seems like skipping them and using a string line might be less hassle in the long run.
