That book club meeting where everyone hated the same book I loved

Last Wednesday was the worst book club meeting I ever sat through. We were discussing 'The Ministry for the Future' by Kim Stanley Robinson, which I thought was brilliant - all that climate stuff felt real and urgent. But three people started arguing it was too preachy and boring, then a guy named Dave said the characters had no depth. I sat there for 90 minutes defending it while they tore it apart. Has anyone else had a book you absolutely loved get completely trashed at your club? How did you handle it?

So Dave who said the characters had no depth, did he actually give any examples (like a specific scene or a character he hated), or was he just making a blanket statement to sound smart?

Probably just wanted to sound smart, typical Dave move.

Blair, I'd bet my next paycheck Dave couldn't name a single character flaw without googling it first. @alicehernandez is spot on, dude just wanted to sound like a film critic after one too many energy drinks. Classic Dave move of throwing out vague complaints to seem deep.
