That $4 thriller I grabbed on a whim at the airport turned out to be my favorite read this year
I was super skeptical because the cover looked like every other generic crime novel. But then the first chapter hooked me with a detail about a librarian who quits her job over a overdue book fine dispute. Has anyone else found a random airport book that totally surprised them?

random finds beat the heavily marketed bestsellers" is SO true. The airport books don't get the big push so they have to actually be GOOD to sell, and that librarian plot point sounds like a real person's life, not a checklist of what sells.

Always wondered about those airport book grabs. Heard a podcast once where the guest mentioned how some of the best genre fiction actually ends up in airport racks because publishers know they gotta hook people fast. That librarian quitting over a fine is such a weird specific detail, sounds like the kind of thing that makes a book feel real. Maybe it's just me but those random finds beat the heavily marketed bestsellers almost every time.

Yeah honestly you just changed my mind on that. Airport books hit different.
