I spent over $300 on a fancy book club subscription box that was a total letdown

Back in 2021, I signed up for one of those curated monthly boxes that sends a new hardcover, themed snacks, and discussion questions. The first box was okay, but the quality dropped fast. By month four, the books were just overstock titles I could have gotten for $5, and the 'artisan' tea was basically grocery store brand. I kept it for almost a full year hoping it would improve, but it never did. Has anyone else found a good way to discover new books for a club without wasting cash on gimmicks?

Overstock titles for $5" is why I just swap books with friends now.

My own book club spent $40 on a "mystery author" box that sent us three copies of the same cookbook. I should have listened to @young.nora sooner about libraries. Now we just meet at the coffee shop and pick something from the staff picks shelf.

Feel your pain, those boxes are such a gamble. My local library's book club picks have been way more reliable.
