Saw a thing at a weld-testing facility that really stuck with me
Honestly, I was down at a shop in Gary last month doing a joint inspection on some high-pressure boiler drums. While I was waiting, I watched a guy set up his weld test piece on a scrap bit of plate instead of a proper steel bench. The foreman chewed him out, saying you can't ground through random junk because it messes with the arc stability. Ngl, I'd never really thought about how the ground clamp placement affects the weld quality that much, but seeing it first-hand made me wonder how many times I've done the same thing without realizing. Has anyone else ever caught a bad habit from just watching how someone else sets up?

Also, rust isn't just an insulator it can actually create a tiny arc gap that destabilizes the whole puddle. I've seen guys chase that ghost for half an hour before finding a dirty clamp spot.

The real problem is that scrap metal can have hidden corrosion or coatings that make it a worse conductor than you think. People forget that rust is basically an insulator.
