Found a tiny crack in a boiler tube that could have blown everything last Tuesday

Was doing a routine inspection on a 40 year old boiler down at the old mill site. Felt a weird vibration I never noticed before so I got up close with a mirror and flashlight. Took me about 20 minutes to spot a hairline crack near the back row of tubes, maybe 1/8 inch long. My old mentor used to say check the spots nobody wants to look, and he was dead right. Anyone else ever find something that small before it turned into a real problem?

Your mentor knew what he was talking about - the spots people avoid looking at are usually the ones where fatigue hides. A crack that small can grow fast once it starts, especially if there's any vibration or water hammer in the system. Glad you caught it when you did.

Gotta disagree, thermal cycling usually settles things in not tears them apart.
