I finally sorted my board game collection by complexity and it changed game night

I mean, my games were just a big heap on the shelf for ages, idk. It always took forever to dig out something to play when people came over. Last Saturday, I spent the whole afternoon putting them in groups by how hard they are to learn, like simple, middle, and really involved ones. Maybe it's just me, but checking each game's rulebook made me remember why I love them. Now, if we want a chill time, we grab from the easy pile, and if we're up for a brain burner, we go for the tough ones. My friend said it cut down the usual arguing over what to play, which was a nice surprise. It's a small win, but seeing everyone get into a game faster felt really good. I guess taking time to sort things out can make a big difference in how much fun you have.

Ask how you decided what went into each group. Did you use a website's complexity rating or just go by feel?

But what if all that sorting just puts games in boxes they don't belong in? My friend did this and now our game nights feel weirdly predictable, like we're on a schedule instead of just hanging out. Half the fun was everyone digging through the messy pile together, arguing about rules we'd forgotten, and finding weird old games we never play. A number on a website can't tell you if a game is right for your specific group on a given night. It just feels like it takes the soul out of it, you know? Now picking a game feels like a boring chore instead of an adventure.

Last year, I sorted my games by how long they take to play, not how hard they are. This helped a lot because we often worry about time. When people visit, we choose from quick games if it's getting late, or longer ones for a free day. We still get to look through a small group of games, which keeps it fun without the mess. It adds some order but does not kill the chance for surprise. In the end, this kind of sorting made our game nights better by cutting out the stress.
