Warning: my coal forge hit 1400 degrees way faster than usual yesterday
I was working on a batch of railroad spike knives and the temp gauge jumped from 900 to 1400 in about 15 minutes. I think my new air gate setting is way too aggressive. Anyone else had a forge run hot like that out of nowhere?

Dial back the air gate a quarter turn at most. You can always add more air later, but burning up your work is a real pain. I learned that the hard way with a batch of tongs.

That jump from 900 to 1400 is a perfect example of how a small change can have a huge effect. I see it all the time, like when you adjust the thermostat just a couple degrees and the whole house feels different in an hour. It's easy to forget how sensitive systems are, whether it's a forge, a car engine, or even a recipe. You tweak one thing thinking it's minor, and the whole result changes faster than you expected.
