Why does every new thriller need 8 episodes when 4 would do

I was scrolling through streaming apps last night and noticed almost every thriller series drags out a simple twist into 8 hours. Just watched one where the big reveal happened in episode 3 but they kept adding fake suspense for 5 more episodes. It makes me lose interest halfway through every time. Anyone else wish showrunners would stick to tight 4 or 6 episode seasons for mysteries instead of padding them out?

Does EVERY streaming show need to be an 8 hour commitment just to tell a simple story? I've bailed on so many thrillers halfway through because they're just spinning their wheels. A tight 4 episode run would make me actually finish them.

Wait isn't that exactly what they're doing, stretching a 90 minute movie into a whole season just to keep you subscribed for another month? Studios figured out that 8 episodes means 8 weeks of you not canceling.

Oh man, you just made me rethink everything. I used to defend these shows saying they needed the extra time for character development and world building. But now I'm sitting here counting episodes and realizing you're right, half of these 8 hour long seasons could've been a tight 90 minutes. The pacing is terrible, they pad it with side plots that go nowhere and long shots of people staring at things. And yeah, they know exactly what they're doing with that weekly release schedule. One month of your subscription gone before you even get to the good part. They're not making art, they're making sure you forget to cancel.
