Burned through The Americans in 12 days and missed whole layers of the story

I watched all 6 seasons of The Americans pretty fast on a week off from work. Problem is I later found out I missed a ton of subtle references and character arcs because I wasn't paying close enough attention. Has anyone else found that watching a dense show really fast ruins some of the payoff?

Did the exact same thing with The Americans, finished it in about 10 days and felt like I just skimmed the surface. Missed so many quiet moments between Philip and Elizabeth because I was just trying to get through the next plot point. Really kicked myself later when I read recaps and realized how much detail was buried in those slower scenes.

Ten days is still pretty fast for a show that dense.

Man, @milacraig nailed it - I did the same thing with Breaking Bad and spent the next month rewatching episodes just to catch all the little looks and silences I totally blew through the first time.
