The cheap rub I laughed at won 3rd at our local comp in Denton
Two weeks ago I mocked a $4 store brand rub that some guy swore by at the Denton county fair. Figured it was all sugar and paprika dust, but he let me taste his brisket right off the pit and it had this weird depth I couldn't place. Grabbed a jar on a whim, ran it on a rack of spare ribs Sunday, and my neighbor actually asked what I changed. I'm not saying it beats a good custom blend, but it held up against my usual stuff for less than half the price. Anyone else had a budget bottle surprise them like that?

Heard a BBQ podcast say store brands win blind tests more than folks admit.

Ain't that the truth. I spent years chasing fancy rubs and my wife still ate my ribs like they were a chore. Now I got a $4 jar holding its own and she's asking for seconds. Guess my palate's just as cheap as my wallet. Next thing you know I'll be defending gas station hot sauce.
