I finally figured out why my cookies were always flat

I mean, for years my chocolate chip cookies would just spread into one giant, thin sheet. My friend in Tacoma tried one and said 'these are good, but they're like lace.' That comment made me look it up. Turns out I was using melted butter straight from the microwave for every single batch. I switched to softened butter last week and bam, they actually have some height now. Anyone else have a simple mistake they made for way too long?

I used to forget the baking soda every single time.

Baking soda is the secret agent of baking, and I always forget to send it in. My cookies come out flat as pancakes, and I just stare at them. It's a special kind of defeat when you realize what you missed. My brain just deletes that step from the recipe every single time. I have to write it in big letters on the bag of flour now.

Special kind of defeat" seems a bit much for some flat cookies.
