The night at Joe's Pizza Hut that ruined blockbuster rentals for me

Back in 2008 I was at a Pizza Hut in Toledo, Ohio with a group of friends for our bad movie night. We rented "The Room" on DVD from a Blockbuster down the street, and the disc was so scratched it froze 12 times during the viewing. That one disaster made me switch to streaming only for our monthly get-togethers. Has anyone else had a rental experience so bad it changed how you source your movies?

A scratched disc is annoying but I still miss the whole ritual of walking through Blockbuster aisles picking out a movie. Streaming just doesn't have that same energy.

Yeah, I read a piece recently about how our brains actually remember the 'failed' experiences more than the good ones when they break a routine. That scratched disc ruined the whole trip, so suddenly renting from Blockbuster feels like a hassle instead of what it mostly was. It's funny how one bad experience can rewrite all those hours we wasted wandering the aisles not finding anything good.

That phrase "the whole ritual of walking through Blockbuster aisles" really gets me. It's wild how something so small like a scratched disc can make you question a whole habit. I think this is part of a bigger pattern where we trade experiences for convenience in everyday life. Like how people now order groceries online instead of wandering the store and discovering something new. We did the same with music when we stopped browsing CD racks and just clicked playlists. The problem is that when one bad rental or one bad delivery happens, it's easy to forget what the good parts of the ritual felt like.
