Bird feeder upgrade that backfired hard on me
I spent like $60 on this fancy squirrel-proof feeder from the big orange store. You know the one, it has the metal cage and the weight-sensitive perch that's supposed to close when a squirrel jumps on. Worked great for about a week. Then I noticed the finches couldn't figure it out either, because the perch was too stiff for their little bodies to trigger it. So I was basically feeding nobody except the occasional brave blue jay. Ended up taking the whole thing down and going back to my old $15 tube feeder. The squirrels still win sometimes but at least the chickadees and goldfinches can actually eat. Has anyone else had a feeder that just didn't work for the smaller birds?
