I always heard the John Muir Trail was the ultimate Sierra trek, but a ranger in Lone Pine told me the High Sierra Trail is actually more varied and sees 75% fewer people.

That ranger's 75% number seems a bit off to me. I've hiked both trails a few times and the High Sierra Trail is quieter, but not that extreme. It's still a well known trail. @gavinb97 is right that you can find real solitude, especially if you go in the fall. The difference is you get more variety on the High Sierra Trail, like going from the giant trees to the high peaks. That's the real draw, not just the crowd numbers.

Oh man, that ranger knows what's up. I did a section of the High Sierra Trail last fall and barely saw a soul.

Sounds lonely to me, I'd rather see some friendly faces on the trail.
