Heard a senior tech say 'the customer's story is the first diagnostic tool' after a tough Ford F-150 misfire call.
He spent 20 minutes just listening to the owner describe the exact sound and when it happened, which pointed us straight to a failing coil pack on cylinder 3 that the scan data alone hadn't nailed down.

Our shop's best diagnostic tool is a good scanner. A story can send you down the wrong path if you don't verify the facts.

But what if the scanner gives you a clean bill and the car still acts up? The story gives you a place to start looking when the data doesn't add up. You need both to really solve the weird ones.

My old boss at Joe's Auto swore by listening first. He caught a bad coil pack the scanner missed because the customer mentioned a specific hill.
