Old timer told me to quit using foam pads on clear coat and he was dead right
Met this guy named Jerry at a shop in Phoenix who's been painting since the 80s. He watched me buff a hood with a foam pad and straight up told me I was wasting time. Switched to a wool pad like he said and cut my buffing time from 20 minutes per panel down to 8. The clear came out way smoother too with no hazing. Anyone else get stubborn about switching tools and regret it?

Saw Jerry coming from a mile away. He's probably still using a rotary from 1985 and won't touch a DA either.

Get that completely. Jerry sounds like a guy who learned his craft a certain way and stuck with it. I can relate, I still use an old flip phone for calls even though I work in IT and know better. Maybe I'm just scared of change, or maybe I like that satisfying click when you close it. But yeah, a DA on a whole room? That's pure efficiency. Jerry's probably got a system down where he doesn't even feel the pain anymore. Or he's just too stubborn to admit it hurts.

Funny you mention that, because I actually read somewhere that Jerry was the go to guy back in the day for teaching the rotary method at a bunch of local clinics. I guess he's still convinced it's the only way to get a proper finish on a drywall joint. I get it, the rotary has its place for small patches and tight spots, but using one on a whole room is just asking for shoulder problems down the line. A DA might feel like cheating to him, but it saves so much time and gives a way more consistent result. I heard he even turned down a free demo from a rep once, just flat out said no. I guess old habits die hard, but I'd rather finish my work in half the day and not have my arm ache for the next two.
