Old photos from my dad's film camera vs. my phone shots now

Was digging through an old box and found these moon photos my dad took in 1987 with a Pentax K1000 and some cheap telephoto lens. I pulled out my Galaxy S23 to compare and honestly, his grainy film shot of a full moon over Lake Erie has way more soul than my crisp digital one. Made me think about all those times I chose convenience over that old manual focus struggle. Anyone else feel like old gear just had more character in the final shot?

My buddy had this old Minolta from his grandpa and took a photo of a rusted fence that looked like a painting. He posted it next to his new mirrorless camera shot of the same fence and the film one got 500 likes, the digital one got like 12. Something about the grain and the light leaks just gave it a feeling you can't fake with a filter.

Are we really gatekeeping with hobby cameras now?

Agree with @king.robin completely, that fence photo comparison says it all. The grain and light leaks become part of the story, not a mistake to be smoothed out. I think the real difference is that old gear forced you to slow down and think about each shot, while a phone just lets you fire away and hope something sticks. That limitation ends up adding a kind of intentionality that makes the final photo feel earned, not just captured. Digital is great for convenience, but it takes away that little bit of magic you get when you only have one chance to get it right.
