My brother told me to just use my phone for moon shots...

He said a real camera was overkill for a beginner, so I tried with my phone for months. The pictures were always just a bright white blob, no detail at all. I finally borrowed a friend's old DSLR with a 300mm lens from a tripod in my backyard, and the craters were suddenly right there. Has anyone else had a piece of gear make that big a difference when starting out?

Same thing happened with my first macro lens.

My brother bought a fancy coffee grinder last year and used it twice. It's like we all get obsessed with the idea of a hobby, buy the perfect gear, and then it just sits in a closet. I see it with cameras, golf clubs, those fancy bread makers. The dream is always more fun than the daily work.

How many of us have a lens like that? I bought a 50mm prime for portraits and used it maybe three times. It just sits in my bag now.
