Looked up at Orion's belt the other night and realized my cheap telescope was lying to me

Spent $80 on a department store scope 2 years ago and thought the smudges were just bad seeing - turns out the damn lens was warped from the factory. Anyone else had a budget telescope ruin their view of a familiar constellation?

Did you ever try returning it? I had almost the same thing happen with a scope I got at a big box store. I was so frustrated because I kept thinking my eyes were just bad or something. What finally worked for me was taking it outside during the day and focusing on a distant tree a few blocks away. That's when I noticed the whole image was wavy on one side. I ended up just cutting my losses and buying a used Orion from a guy on craigslist for like $120. It was night and day difference honestly, like actually seeing stars instead of blurry specks. The cheap one is just sitting in my closet now, basically a paperweight.

@roberts95 maybe your tree test just works on cheap scopes, but my fancy one's perfect and you're wrong.
