Vent: I tried to map a Roman road in my county with LiDAR data and got a total surprise

Honestly, I spent a month looking at the public scans, convinced a straight line of crop marks near the old fort was the main route. Tbh, when I finally walked the site, it was just a drainage ditch from the 1800s that happened to line up perfectly. Has anyone else had a 'sure thing' theory fall apart when you actually went into the field?

Used to trust maps until I found a county line marker was just some farmer's old fence post.

Honestly how much does that really matter in daily life though. Like are you out there needing to know the exact county line for something important. Seems like one of those things that's only a problem if you go looking for it.

Try getting an ambulance when your 911 call bounces between two county dispatch centers. That line on a map decides who sends help and how fast it gets there. It's not about looking for a problem, it's about the problem finding you when you're in trouble. I've seen the delay firsthand. Those lines matter a lot more when you're the one waiting.
