TIL a single mature oak can drop over 10,000 acorns in a good year
I was reading an old forestry extension bulletin from my state university and that number just floored me. I've been cleaning up acorns for 15 years and never actually counted, but 10k per tree explains so much about my fall cleanup jobs. It's no wonder the ground is completely covered under some of these giants. Has anyone else come across a tree fact that made you go 'oh, that's why'?

That's a crazy number... makes you wonder how many actually grow into new trees. The survival rate has to be tiny. What happens to all the ones that don't make it?

Yeah, the survival rate has to be tiny. It's nature's version of sending out ten thousand resumes and hoping one company calls you back. Most of them just end up as squirrel snacks or my weekend chore.
