Just realized anime discussion threads are basically just people yelling past each other
I was reading a thread about the new season of that fantasy anime last night, and someone said the main character is 'too OP' and another person hit back with 'but the source material is better.' Neither of them actually talked about the same thing. The first person was complaining about the show's pacing, the second was defending the manga. It made me think how most of these discussions are just people arguing about different stuff without noticing. Has anyone else caught themselves doing this too?

That "reactive machines" bit really nails it. It's the same thing you see at town hall meetings or even family dinners now - everyone's so busy loading up their next point they quit listening halfway through the first sentence.

Oh man this is so true lol. I was in a thread about that new mecha anime last week and someone was complaining about the animation quality being choppy while someone else jumped in ranting about the voice acting being off. Neither of them even mentioned the same episodes. The first guy was talking about episode 3 and the other was on episode 7. I tried to point it out and got downvoted into oblivion lol. It's like people just wanna vent their frustrations and find someone to argue with regardless of what's actually being said. Social media has turned all of us into these reactive machines where we just fire off responses without reading properly first.

Yeah I actually read a study somewhere that said people make up their mind about an argument in like the first few seconds of reading something. Once they pick a side they just scan for stuff to confirm what they already think. Kinda makes you wonder why we even bother with discussions online half the time.
