My aunt's comment about my garden journal fixed my whole system
I kept a garden journal for years but it was mostly just dates and what I planted. My aunt visited last June and flipped through it, then said 'this reads like a receipt, where are the failures and the funny stuff?' She was right. I started writing down what went wrong, like the tomatoes that got blight in July or the squirrel that dug up my carrots three times. I also started noting the weather each week and little details like which plants smelled strongest in the morning. Now when I look back at 2024, I can actually remember the season instead of just the dates. It took me about 2 weeks to get used to writing more freely. Has anyone else changed their journal style after someone pointed out something obvious? I'm curious what else I might be missing in how I track things.

My journal reads like a receipt and its painful because I relate to that too hard. I kept a workout log for years and it was just numbers, then my buddy said "so you're telling me you never had a bad day?" Now I write down when I almost dropped a dumbbell on my foot or when I skipped leg day because I ate too much pizza. Turns out, the messy stuff is what actually makes it worth looking back at. I wish someone had pointed that out to me a decade ago, but better late than never.

Ha! My logs just say "ouch" and "ate too much" repeated for 5 years.

Messy stuff is what makes it worth looking back at" - now I need failure notes in my recipe book too.
