Honestly, that 'beginner' wood carving kit cost me $90 and a lot of frustration

I bought a starter set online last fall because the ad said it had everything you needed. The tools were cheap and dull right out of the box, and the wood blocks were full of knots. I spent a whole weekend just trying to get a clean cut on a simple spoon shape and gave up. Has anyone found a good way to start carving without dropping a ton of cash on tools?

Ugh, that's the worst. I got a decent used knife for cheap and practiced on scrap wood from a lumber yard.

My first attempts at carving looked like a beaver had gone at the wood with its eyes closed. Scrap wood was a lifesaver, saved my wallet and my pride. I probably went through a whole pile of pine before my cuts stopped looking so tragic. It’s amazing how much you can mess up a block before it starts to look like something. What did you try to carve first?
