Debate I had with a guy at the hardware store about fixing vs replacing tools
He was adamant that re-oiling an old hand plane was a waste of time and I should just buy a new one. I told him I'd rather spend 45 minutes fixing it myself than throw money at something that still works fine. Which side do you lean on for beat-up tools you got for cheap?

Mila gets it exactly right, it's not about the money it's about the satisfaction. Though I'll admit, I once spent a whole afternoon trying to resurrect an old brace and bit and ended up with a sore wrist and a tool that still wobbles like a toddler. My husband just handed me a new one and said "here, you earned it.

Man, that guy was missing the point completely! I spent two hours last weekend trying to save a rusty old handsaw from the trash, and my wife just shook her head the whole time. Sometimes it's not about the cost of the tool, it's about the feeling of bringing something back to life yourself.
