A barista in Austin changed my mind about decaf after 11 years of hating it
I was up late doomscrolling and landed on a thread about coffee snobbery, then remembered this conversation from last month. This barista at a tiny place off South Congress overheard me scoff at someone ordering decaf and handed me a cup of half-caf, said 'taste it before you judge the whole category.' It was nutty and smooth, not that burnt watery stuff I always pictured, and he explained that most bad decaf is from cheap beans, not the process itself. Now I keep a bag of decaf for after 8pm and honestly sleep better, which I did not expect at 34. Anyone else flip on something they were weirdly stubborn about for over a decade?
Took me 40 years to admit that oat milk doesn't actually taste like cardboard, so I get it. The decaf thing though, that's a whole other level of stubborn. I still won't touch the stuff before noon, but I've learned to respect anyone who can brew a cup that doesn't taste like wet socks.
