Showerthought: Elaborate siding patterns might be creating unseen moisture traps

Lately, I've noticed a shift towards these intricate, geometric siding layouts that clients love for curb appeal, but I keep wondering about the water management behind them. I remember a project from last spring where we installed a herringbone style, and despite our best flashing efforts, I heard through the grapevine that small leaks developed in the valleys. It's got me scratching my head, because the aesthetics are undeniable, yet I'm genuinely confused if we're introducing points of failure for the sake of fashion. Are we, as installers, adequately communicating these potential risks, or is the demand for unique looks overriding practical knowledge? I'd love to hear if anyone else has navigated this balance between art and longevity in our work.

Is this a real problem or just installer paranoia?

Consider liability, not just design preferences.

My old boss thought like @the_taylor until that leaky Craftsman job.

Appreciate you voicing this concern, as it echoes my own doubts on complex designs. We faced similar pushback when suggesting more drainage-friendly options last fall. But when does standing our ground become part of the job, you know?
