Appreciation post: I used to think a $40 rock hammer from a big box store was fine, but after the tip snapped off on a piece of granite in the Blue Ridge Mountains, I'm saving for a proper Estwing.

That cheap hammer cost me a whole weekend trip and about $150 in gas and fees, so what brands do you all trust for field work that won't fail?

Estwings are solid, but that granite can break any hammer tip.

Hold up, granite is not some magic tool killer. A properly heat treated, high grade steel tip on a good hammer can take it. The issue is people using the wrong technique, like striking at a bad angle or using a hammer that's too light for the job. I've seen guys run the same hammer head for years on granite slabs with no chipping because they know how to hit it right. Blaming the rock lets bad habits off the hook.

Saw a video where a geologist said granite's quartz content is what wrecks tools. Even the best steel can chip if you hit it wrong. That's why some people keep a separate, cheaper hammer for hard rock. They just expect to replace the tip more often. Makes you wonder if any hammer is truly granite-proof, right?
