Rant: Holiday dinners feel too quiet now compared to my childhood

Growing up, our house was packed with relatives during the holidays, and we'd all share stories while passing dishes around. These days, it's usually just a few of us, and half the time people are checking their phones. I mean, idk, maybe it's just me, but I miss that noisy, warm atmosphere. How do you all keep that sense of togetherness alive in your families?

It's part of a bigger shift I see everywhere. We're all connected online, but the in person stuff gets quieter and more scattered. My childhood memories are loud because nobody had a screen to look at during a meal. We have to be more deliberate now, like a no phone rule at the table, just to get a slice of that old feeling back.

Totally get what you mean about childhood memories being loud! I remember my family dinners were just a wall of everyone talking at once. Now we have to fight for that same energy, and it's a real choice to put the phones away.

Read a study that said just having a phone on the table makes conversation more shallow. Screens literally kill the vibe we're trying to get back. Makes those no-phone rules seem less like a choice and more like a necessity.
