Quitting my pre-bed phone scroll made mornings easier

For years, I'd end each day glued to my phone, scrolling through social media or news. My brain would be buzzing when I tried to sleep. Last month, I read about blue light affecting sleep and decided to try something. I made a rule: no screens after 9 PM. At first, I felt bored and restless without my phone. I picked up an old novel from my shelf and started reading a few pages each night. Within a week, I was falling asleep faster and waking up less groggy. Now, I look forward to that quiet time with a book instead of a screen.

Honestly that whole blue light thing never really clicked for me. My phone is how I unwind, scrolling through dumb stuff to quiet my own brain down. Trying to read a book at night just makes my mind race more. That bright screen actually helps me zone out and get sleepy. Maybe my brain is just wired wrong, but the phone scroll is my signal that the day is over.

My husband used to say the same thing about his phone helping him sleep. The trick is the type of content. Scrolling through stressful news or exciting reels is different than looking at calm, boring stuff. Maybe try a strict rule of ONLY looking at a single, dull app, like a recipe site or a weather feed, for ten minutes. It gives the brain a shut-down signal without the mental rollercoaster.
