My uncle's advice about a '78 Chevy truck back in 2012

He told me, 'Don't buy that thing, the frame is Swiss cheese.' I was 19 and thought it looked cool, so I paid $1200 for it anyway. Two months later, the rear end dropped while I was turning into my own driveway in Springfield. Had to sell it for scrap. Anyone else ever ignore a warning that turned out to be painfully right?

Man, that's the story of being young right there. It's like we're all wired to think the person warning us just doesn't get it, that our case is special. I see it everywhere, not just with cars. People get told a relationship is bad news, a job is a dead end, or a house has major problems, and they just have to learn the hard way. The older I get, the more I realize that good advice usually just sounds boring.

My dad warned me about a 2005 Ford Focus with a rebuilt title back in 2015. He said the front end was all wrong. I paid $1800 and the steering rack completely failed on the highway a month later. Cost more to fix than the car was worth. I should have just listened.

My mechanic friend checks any used car I buy now, saved me twice.
