My dog's flamingo rescue mission at the block party
At our annual block party, I brought my dog along. He spotted a pink plastic flamingo in a neighbor's yard and thought it was in trouble. He ran over, picked it up, and started parading around with it. Everyone stopped to watch, and soon we were all cracking up. It broke the ice and we spent the rest of the evening chatting about our pets.

No way, he really thought that flamingo was in trouble? Dogs have the wildest imaginations.

Use that flamingo as a social tool for your dog. My own dog grabbed a garden gnome once, and now it's our thing at parties. Bring it to the next block event and let him do his hero act again. People always laugh and start talking about their own pets. It's a sure way to make friends without trying too hard.

My building's courtyard turns into a social hub whenever someone's dog parades around with a silly toy. Pets just cut through the awkwardness we all feel at community events.
