Update: A regular asked me to lie about work being done so they could claim a tax write-off...

I said no but now they're salty and might not call back... Ever had to choose between a client and your honesty?

Honestly that whole tax write-off stuff is sketchy. A buddy of mine does power washing, and a client wanted a receipt for a bigger patio than they actually have. Said it was for an insurance claim after some fake storm damage. My friend just sent the real invoice and said he couldn't do it. Lost the client, which sucked for a minute, but later heard that guy got into real trouble with his insurance company. Sometimes the short-term loss saves you a bigger headache down the road.

Look, faking receipts is wrong, but how often does it actually cause real problems? Many people cheat on taxes or insurance and never get in trouble. Even if they get caught, it's often just a small fine. Your friend's client was probably just unlucky or made a mistake. Turning down work over this can hurt your business more than help. Most times, these things are not as bad as they seem.
