A client in Phoenix offered me a flat $500 for a project that took three weeks.
I was so focused on landing the work that I didn't break down the hours, and ended up making less than minimum wage. Now I write a simple scope of work for every single job, no matter how small. How do you all handle pricing for projects that drag on longer than expected?

Scope documents just create more work and scare off clients. A flat fee is simple and builds trust. If a project takes longer, that's on you for not working fast enough. Learning to be efficient is part of the job. Charging by the hour makes clients suspicious of every minute.

Oh sure, because clients never change their minds halfway through. A flat fee for a moving target just means you're working for free. That's not trust, that's getting taken for a ride.

I mean, saying it's just on you for not working fast enough feels kinda harsh. Clients can add stuff without realizing it takes time. A simple scope doc just makes sure everyone's on the same page from the start.
