Overheard a guy at the scrap yard say he never checks his furnace lining after 100 heats, and my jaw dropped.

He was bragging about saving time, but all I could think about was the 6-inch crack we found in our main unit last year. That was a $15,000 repair and a full day of downtime. It's not about being lazy, it's about being safe and not wrecking equipment. How often do you all actually do your lining inspections?

What kind of genius skips a check that could cost him his whole furnace? I guess he's saving up all his time for when he's standing in a cold shop waiting on a rebuild. Maybe he thinks the furnace fairy comes and fixes cracks while he sleeps. That fifteen grand surprise sounds like a real fun way to learn a lesson, doesn't it?

Wait, he was actually BRAGGING about that? How is skipping a basic safety check something to be proud of? That kind of thinking is how you end up with a total meltdown, not just a repair bill. Our shop rule is every 40 heats, and we've caught two small issues this year alone that would have been huge problems. Saving five minutes is never worth risking the whole unit.

Holy cow, that's wild. I check ours every 50 heats, no question. A small crack is a cheap fix if you catch it early. Let it go and you're looking at a full rebuild, and that's before you even count the lost production time. Saving an hour now can cost you a week later.
