My foreman in Dayton said my core wash was too thin, and he was right.

I was brushing it on like paint, but he showed me how a thicker slurry prevents gas holes in the final casting. Anyone have a good ratio for a green sand wash?

Try mixing it to a thick pancake batter. That consistency always gave me a good seal.

Thick pancake batter is a solid start. Honestly though, skip the ratio and go by feel. You want it to coat a core and not run off. If it drips like water, it's way too thin. The goal is a good even layer that dries without cracking. Too thick and it'll peel, too thin and you get those gas holes.

Jordan's "go by feel" advice is great until you end up with a batch that looks like a science project gone wrong.
